75th Anniversary Event
On the 20th September 2009, we held the Mortimer Classic MCC 75th Anniversary scramble. Photo's here!
With perfect weather conditions, the track in prime condition, a large entry of solos and sidecars and a large crowd in attendance, the racing was the icing on the 75th Anniversary cake!
In the British Classic Scrambles final round held over two races, the championship was finally decided in favour of Scott Hayworth, a worthy successor to the crown held by Andy Roberton. The season long battle was really over when Andy sustained a damaged rear brake on his 500cc after a spill in the first leg that put him out of contention. With a faultless display of seemingly effortless riding, the smooth riding Scott was invincible in both races. After finishing second in the final championship race, the never say die Andy having ridden his 350cc machine this time around, went straight across to congratulate the new British Classic Champion after another great British Championship series this year.
In the other races, the Clubman class was won by Andy Watkins; Dave Bell took the pre-60; Andy Roberton the pre-65 300-350cc class and Tom Willoughby the pre-65 250ccclass. Adrian Cox won the pre-68 unit over 350cc class; Keith Best won the pre-74 unlimited and a cracking tyres width victory for Tim Manton just edging Dave Bell in the pre-65 over 350cc race.
The sidecar races were hectic and spectacular as has come to be expected at the Bennetts Hill circuit and with an excellent entry, was split into two heats and two finals - just like it used to be! Rob Wilkinson/Mark Nisbet/Paul Hutchman (who substituted the injured Mark in the final) won the first final for the Dave Coates Cup and Arthur Walton/James George took the second final.
